Sprint CUP by Funyo – Magny Cours

10-05-2021

After a thrilling start to the season at the Coupes de Pâques, the drivers in the sprint CUP by Funyo met up again on the Nevers Magny-Cours circuit in the context of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS meeting. Right from the start of practice they went at it hammer and tongs and Jonathan Dessens (AMGV), Ewen Hachez (HMC Racing), Benoît Eveillard (Belt Racing), and Christian Camboulive (HMC Racing) were locked in a no-holds-barred battle at the head of the field. There were several newcomers at Magny-Cours like the drivers from the Endurance CUP by Funyo Julien Charitour, Guillaume Yaouanc as well as Benoît Steck-Ridel (HMC Racing) and they weren’t at all overawed by their first race in the 2021 Sprint CUP. This was also the case for Sébastien Viale (HMC Racing) who was making his comeback after a season’s pause. Julien Devaux, who was having his first race in Sprint, also put on a stand-out performance and the ANS Motorsport driver soon went to the top of the time sheets. It was a great start by this promising newcomer coached by Nicolas Schatz.

This season a second qualifying session has been added enabling the pole setter to gain an extra point.  As was the case at Nogaro, Dessens confirmed his pace and set both pole positions at Magny-Cours.

While Eveillard made a blinding start in race 1 and shot into the lead, his scrap with Ewen Hachez for the topmost step of the podium kept us on tenterhooks all weekend. Behind these two the battle was just as intense as Dessens, Edouard Héry and Camboulive duked it out for the third step of the podium swapping places lap after lap. Guillaume Yaouanc, Ethan Bernard (E-brid), Olivier Gauclère (HMC Racing), Sosthène Rousseau (AVP), Jean-Claude Rolland (HMC Racing), Bruno Fretin (HMC Racing) and Sébastien Viale closed the gap to them and turned the top 10 hierarchy upside down! We were able to follow these thrilling battles live on Youtube!

There was no let-up in the Gentleman category either. While Edouard Hery and Christian Camboulive remain in the lead in this category other drivers like Olivier Gauclère and Frank Lefèvre (HMC Racing) who scored their first podium finish of the season put on creditable performances. Rolland (HMC Racing) clinched his first victory in race 3. Claude Chaumot (AVP) rounded out the top 5 in the category. The performances of these experienced drivers underlined the level of driving skills in the Sprint CUP by Funyo and showed us that nothing is certain until the chequered flag falls!

In the Espoirs – DMA Armatures category, Ewen Hachez the youngster from the Endurance GT & Proto branch confirmed his speed and his absolute mastery of his Funyo. He also set the four fastest laps in the races gaining four additional points. By winning three out of the four weekend’s heats the young driver from Rennes left Magny-Cours in the lead in the championship. Ethan Bernard who has just turned 17 continues to improve and finished his races showing a fine turn of speed. His work paid off and he clinched fourth place in the overall classification in race 4. The youngest competitor in the field is shooting up the time sheets and very soon he will be fighting among the front-runners!

After the second meeting of the 2021 season, the cards were reshuffled again. Hachez (195 points) left Magny-Cours in the lead followed by Eveillard (176 points) and Dessens (161 points). Now we’re heading for the Albi Grand Prix (5 – 7 June) where we forward to welcoming the very enthusiastic Albigensian public.
